SSSooooooooo lately I’ve been doing a lot of work on both paintings and writings for my present series of art and research. Thought I’d give a bit of insight as to what my art represents currently. The main concepts of my work is circulating around the communications an individual who is unfamiliar in the experiences of sexual assault may somehow comprehend the damages rape can cause. Also, the ideas of how experience’s truly ignites knowledge I find to be rather amazing. Before I was raped I’d been passive and somewhat indifferent to these issues. Someone would make a joke or a silly comment about sexual violence and I would either ignore or laugh along with it. But when I WAS raped all these comments, images, and actions became so affirming that they felt like a literal slap in the face. It took me two years to even accept what had happened to me and three years to not feel shame or hatred for myself. So I decided to comprise these works of art from these revelations, mainly due to an unfortunate event involving eight girls from my college being raped and when they had gone to report it the heads of the university threatened their ability to stay at this school. These girls were betrayed by these people in order to avoid bad PR. Straight up…that’s bull. I want to bring awareness and educate people that this is not an issue that needs to be disregarded.
*If anyone wants to email me their stories I’d love to read them. They prove to be valuable research material for this series of work based on the language each individual use to tell their story. These writings will not be published and will only be viewed by me. However, the information tile for each piece will contain the phrase “inspired by a survivor.” And your name if you want it, if not that’s fine.
